There are two horses in the house. One has blocky toffee hair and one has creamy hair.

Upstairs is where heaven is, and a giant orange butterfly as long as a bathtub. The upstairs balcony looks over the horses, and a little blue pig next to a neon yellow towel, and a seal with every hair pointing in the same direction.

At the end of the long hallway there is a small room with deep, spongy carpet. Watching TV and a plate with the picture of an old woman on it. Why would you turn someone into a plate.

Drawing from memories rich in the details of place, Caitlyn Au builds environments that constrict and direct the audience’s view. A massive framework of fence materials conceals a surprising tableaux nestled within. Au brings to the garden of The Arts Club of Chicago a secret relic of her past, visible from just two vantage points. As if experienced through a stereoscope, the warped scene places the viewer in a nostalgic mindscape of the artist’s invention. 

Caitlyn Min-ji Au is a sculptor based in Chicago. She earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the University of Chicago. Au has made solo exhibitions at the Broodthaers Society of America (New York) and Shanghai Seminary (Chicago). She will be included in the Lagos Biennial 2026 (Nigeria) and will open a solo show at Tureen Gallery (Dallas) in the spring.
