About the Exhibition
Prefatory Note:
This exhibition represents the first attempt that has been made to present a systematic collection of the Flemish tapestries of the fifteenth and early sixteenth century. It is not perfect but it does show the history of the art as it was developed by the most important schools of designers and includes a number of specially notable pieces. Most of the attributions will be new to students in the field, disturbingly new to some. They cannot be judged without careful consideration of the more complete evidence which has been given in the article referred to in the College of Art Bulletin for December, 1926, and will be given in extenso in a History of Gothic Tapestry, now in preparation by the author.
The exhibition has been made possible through the cooperation of Mrs. Rockefeller McCormick, Bolder & Steinmeyer, De Motte, A.S. Drey, Duveen Brothers, P.W. French & Company, Seidlitz & Van Baarn, Jacques Seligmann & Company, and Arnold Seligmann, Rey & Company. Author Uphan Pope has contributed important suggestions and assistance.
