Sarah and Joseph Belknap: Afterglow: A Garden Installation

8 April - 16 August, 2014

CHICAGO 14 MARCH 2014 – The Arts Club of Chicago is pleased to announce Sarah and Joseph Belknap’s Afterglow, the premiere temporary garden installation at the renowned art space. Known for their engagement with ideas about the cosmos, the Belknaps have spent the last six years working collaboratively on projects that map the moon, hijack newspapers, demarcate landscapes, or test unconventional materials. At The Arts Club, they will install a group of grand-scale “meteorites” in arrested positions that will be visible from the street and the interior of the building. Fascinated by the possibility of interrupting the motion of cosmic debris as it falls to earth, they have paired this idea with the slowing down of sunlight in the process of phosphorescence. In the evening, as the sun goes down, the faux rocks will glow with the light of the sun that they have captured during the day. As the Belknaps have described it: “Afterglow considers both the interactions of rocks falling to earth and electromagnetic radiation by playfully suspending both of them in metastable states.”

The Belknaps have been featured in exhibitions at Heaven Gallery, Chicago, IL; The Ice Box, Philadelphia, PA; Dominican University, River Forest, IL; A+D Gallery, Chicago, IL; Zolla Lieberman, Chicago, IL; RAID Projects, Los Angeles, CA; CAVE, Detroit, MI; Western Exhibitions, Chicago, IL; Chicago Artists Coalition, Los Caminos, St. Louis MI; and Airplane, Brooklyn, NY. Later this year, they will be featured in the series Chicago Works at the Museum of Contemporary Art and at Seerveld Gallery at Trinity Christian College, Palos Heights, IL, in February 2015.

The Belknaps are also founders of their own design firm iamhome.

The Arts Club of Chicago is located at 201 East Ontario Street, on the southeast corner of St. Clair and Ontario. Exhibitions are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Saturday, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.
